Why It Matters

The beginning of the 21st century brought with it the most globalised period in human history. With exponential innovations in technology, it has never been easier to fluidly engage in real time with people, cultures, and places in a manner truly unfathomable just decades before. For the younger generation, this incredible interconnectivity has been the norm.

Prior to the pandemic, the global circulation of people, ideas, and capital was common-place, global business and education thrived and world leaders were compelled to engage with one another. In these few years leading to the crippling events that began in late 2019, humanity perhaps stood at the threshold of a new era of global connectedness, stewarded increasingly by the younger generation as natives to the globalised world. The possibilities for a more enlightened, peaceful, and prosperous humanity seemed limitless. But at the same time a worrying trend arose: the onset of populist-driven localism in politics. Arising in part as a reflex reaction to the breadth of cultural and economic change, this trend saw a misplaced yearning for (or resurrection of) outmoded nationalistic norms. Once the pandemic hit, these forces went into hyperdrive, effectively undoing years of progress.

The pandemic taught us a grave lesson: the collective gains made by humanity can be quickly undone. As we move into the mid-2020s, in an incredible turn of events the world has become more disconnected as ever before. Harmful ideological rhetoric stemming from cultural hubris and ignorance increasingly clouds personal and political relationships across cultures. We have found ourselves facing an epic disconnect that threatens us all.

Yet, there is hope that emerges from all this. The pandemic reaffirmed the plain fact that humans cannot afford to decouple. Although still largely latent, there is a growing realisation from global youth that the future of the human race indeed rests on an interconnected world. It is this awakening that New Global Normal aims to further fuel. This is based on an unwavering philosophy that intercultural connectivity represents perhaps the greatest force for peace, stability, and prosperity in the epoch ahead.

All systemic change begins with local action. Importantly, intercultural communication and active global citizenship are learned skills. Engaging thoughtfully across different cultural contexts, actively exposing ourselves to perspectives and experiences different to our own and practising cultural humility: these actions transform us into active global citizens. They allow us to meaningfully and consciously engage with the world around us with deep self-awareness of our own worldview. It is here where New Global Normal begins its mission to unite a divided world. At the crux of our vision is the radical idea that investing in engagement is investing in peace. By equipping the youth of today with the skills to effectively navigate a globalised world, we are doing our part to ensure a better tomorrow.

What we do

Empower youth as leaders in intercultural dialogue

New Global Normal establishes and enables youth-led chapters which engage their local communities with what it means to be an active global citizen. Chapters equip youth with the support, resources and community networks that allow them to carry out NGN’s mission within their local communities. The chapter program empowers students to be agents of change for building a better world.

Champion global citizenship values

Engaging thoughtfully across different cultural contexts, actively exposing ourselves to perspectives and experiences different to our own, and practising cultural humility: these actions transform us into active global citizens. They allow us to meaningfully and consciously engage with the world around us with deep self-awareness of our own worldview. Our framework for global citizenship focuses on developing cultural humility, cultural curiosity, and cultural awareness, and is an unique and inclusive alternative to ‘cultural competency’ frameworks. Our definition of culture recognises international, national, and community-level expressions of culture.

Build an international network of youth

Our philosophy is guided by a ‘bottom-up’ approach towards youth empowerment. We strive to build a global platform for youth to engage critically with the importance of global citizenship and intercultural communication. This youth-led community will spearhead clear, conscious, and meaningful communication and cooperation across cultural divides.
